The problem is that a "nice house" and a "decent car" by Polish standard are not the same what they mean in the USA. Why would I want to own them? Why would that ever be considered a symbol of success when they're nearly impossible to park in European cities, let alone the fact that the road infrastructure isn't designed to accommodate them? You can't even buy real SUVs in Poland, dealers don't have them on offer. It's the same in most cities.īut you don't own two big SUVs/pick-ups. It might not be American standard, but it's no worse than any other second tier European country.ĭecent public transport? It's really just two different cultures, and we can't compare them so easily.īecause we don't have European advantages Americans usually think of, like great and free healthcare (our healthcare system is terrible), decent public transport or beautiful cities (even Kraków is full of commieblocks). Most of your money goes on rent, and forget about buying. Not to mention housing costs - look at SF or anywhere else considered to be a great place to earn money. not being at risk of being shot, not having to tolerate a healthcare system that seems designed to screw the patient as much as possible, not having to work like hell (what's the point in having money for vacations if it's considered a luxury to take two weeks holiday?), not having to put up with a country that considers "American Cheese" to be real food, etc etc. It's more than enough to live on, but what you are left with is pitiful compared to what you would have in the US in terms of purchasing power - I'm talking electronics, cars, luxury goods, travel. Yes, but in programming in western europe you can easily be expected to be paid less than half your US salary. There are more questions I have, but these are the ones I can think of right now. How much for day to day expenses like- a lunch out with coworkers, 4 x 0.5l of Okocim lager from a shop, 750 ml of decent wodka, a ~20 gram bag of rolling tobacco, a frozen pizza, a pizza delivery? What about car insurance, road tax, and fuel? Let's assume we buy the same car that we own now- a ten year old Volvo V50.Īt what age does government schooling begin? At what age does mandatory government schooling begin? What are child care costs for children under the government schooling age like? How does the health care system work? Do employers typically provide insurance? Do we have to pay insurance? How much would it cost to have another baby? How much for mobile phone service for two mobiles for a month with a reasonable amount of minutes and not a lot of data or texts?
How fast is and how much should we pay for internet service? What would we expect to pay in utilities for such a house or apartment? Are these generally covered by the property owner? How much does 1 kwh of electricity cost? Is around 2.500 zl per month a reasonable amount to budget for this? We would like something bigger than 100 square meters with an okay commute to the Opera metro station. I would love if someone could give an idea about some of the following:Ī house or apartment. The main ones I would like to ask /r/poland are related to cost of living. There are a lot of things that we're considering when deciding about making the move. I'm really excited about the possibility of working with these guys, but we had never considered living in Poland before.
